Unai Emery admits despite knowing they would go physical against Liverpool they still couldn’t do enough offensively.

Villarreal manager Unai Emery admits they couldn’t do more than they have done offensively against Liverpool in the Champions League.

Villarreal hosted Liverpool in the return leg of the Champions League but were defeated once against despite scoring 2 goals in the first half to go level with the Reds on aggregate.

The Yellow submarine lost focus in the second half of the game and jeopardize their early lead against Liverpool.

Speaking after the game last night Emery said: “When you play a semi-final tie, you have to be close to perfection. In two games, I can summarize it in 45 good minutes defensively there, 45 bad minutes with 2-0. Offensively we couldn’t do more, but we came with a good result. Today’s goal was to score the first goal to get closer to the comeback. The second goal has strengthened us a lot, because in the first half we made a great effort that could weigh on us later.”

Emery further stated that they knew they would have to go physical against a strong Liverpool side and also added that Gerard Moreno’s injury left them with a leader on the pitch.

“We knew we had to play a very physical game. We had to enter duels and there we have deactivated them and we have matched their intensity. We had to make them see that they could suffer. Gerard Moreno’s injury has left us without a leader on the pitch.

“The fans have experienced something magnificent. It has been necessary to put the icing on the cake to reach the final. In two games you have to do a lot of things well and we couldn’t do it there. We came out with possibilities, but we haven’t been able to.”
