Roma manager Paulo Fonseca thought there was chance to qualify for the final against United in the Europa League but was difficult for the Romans

Roma head coach Paulo Fonseca stated that he thought it was still possible for his side to qualify in to the Europa final against United.

The Romans were victorious in the second leg of the competition overturning United’s 1-0 lead in the first half to win 3-2, but the 8-5 aggregate stopped them from progressing.

Fonseca stated after the game that his side show great character in the second half of the game as he thought they had the chance to qualify for the final.

“I thought it was still possible to get to the final, even if we were facing a side like Manchester United, Fonseca said. Today, and in the first 45 minutes of the first leg, I think we showed that was possible.

“But we got the second half wrong in Manchester and from that point it was always going to be difficult to score four goals against a team like United. But we scored three and we could have scored a few more – but Manchester United took advantage of the few chances they had.”

It was announced that Fonseca will be replaced by former Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho next season and when asked about his experience with Roma he said: “To have been the coach of Roma was a great honour. It was a great pleasure to be part of Italian football. I have learned a lot. We always need to look at the positives and there have been a lot in my career. It’s been a tough experience but a rewarding one.”
