Manchester United Nears Deal for Sporting Coach Rúben Amorim
Manchester United is closing in on a deal to appoint Sporting CP’s Rúben Amorim as their new manager, with the club prepared to pay his €10 million release clause to replace Erik ten Hag ahead of Sunday’s clash with Chelsea.
Manchester United’s pursuit of Rúben Amorim as their next manager is nearing completion, with Sporting CP confirming that the Premier League club has expressed a willingness to pay his €10 million release clause.
This comes amid a recent statement from Sporting to Portugal’s financial regulator, indicating United’s formal approach and intentions to secure Amorim as soon as possible.
United, keen to bring Amorim in before their upcoming match against Chelsea, reportedly sees the Portuguese coach as an ideal replacement for Erik ten Hag, who was dismissed on Tuesday following a defeat to West Ham, leaving the club in a precarious 14th position in the league.
In the interim, former United player Ruud van Nistelrooy has been appointed to lead the team for the Carabao Cup tie against Leicester City, but it is anticipated this will be his sole game in charge if the deal with Amorim is finalized quickly.
Amorim’s career at Sporting has been impressive since his 2020 move from Braga. He led the team to two league titles, ending a 19-year drought, and earned widespread praise for revitalizing Sporting’s playing style.
His success with the Lisbon-based club has attracted interest from several top European teams, including Liverpool, Barcelona, and Bayern Munich, although Amorim chose to stay at Sporting at the close of last season.
Sporting, meanwhile, is preparing for Amorim’s possible departure, with reports suggesting that B-team coach João Pereira could take over for the remainder of the season.
The club will face Estreia Armadora in the Primeira Liga on Friday, a match that could serve as Amorim’s final appearance on the Sporting sidelines.
Manchester United’s interest in Amorim highlights their ambition to revitalize the team’s performance under a young, tactically astute manager. United’s captain Bruno Fernandes has previously praised Amorim’s work at Sporting, crediting him with transforming the team into one of the most consistent in Portugal.
