Isau Ogunkunle remains Nigeria’s last hope in table tennis at the 2024 Paralympic Games as he faces France’s Maxime Thomas in the men’s Class 4 quarter-finals on Wednesday. Ogunkunle’s match carries the nation’s expectations after his compatriots Christiana Alabi, Abiola Adesope, and Kayode Alabi exited the competition.

On Tuesday, Abiola Adesope was defeated by French player Lucas Didier in straight sets (11-9, 11-4, 11-6) in their Round of 16 singles Class 9 match, ending his medal run. In another intense battle, Christiana Alabi lost 3-1 (11-8, 11-5, 10-12, 12-10) to Chile’s Tamara Leonelli in the women’s singles, Class 8. Kayode Alabi also fell short, losing to Thailand’s Rungroj Thainiyom in the men’s Class 6 quarter-finals.

Team Nigeria’s campaign at the Games has so far yielded only one medal, with para-badminton player Eniola Bolaji winning bronze on Monday. As the tournament progresses, all eyes are now on Ogunkunle to secure a second medal for Nigeria and keep the nation’s hopes alive in table tennis.
