Sinner Denies Djokovic 100th Title with Shanghai Masters Triumph
Jannik Sinner thwarted Novak Djokovic’s bid for a 100th career title, winning the Shanghai Masters final 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 to claim his seventh title of the season and continue his dominant 2024 run.
Jannik Sinner denied Novak Djokovic a chance to claim his 100th career title with a straight-sets victory in the Shanghai Masters final. Sinner, currently ranked world number one, defeated Djokovic 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 to win his seventh title of an extraordinary 2024 season, adding to his triumphs at the Australian Open and US Open.
Djokovic, aiming to join tennis legends Jimmy Connors and Roger Federer in the exclusive club of players with 100 career titles, fell short after a few costly mistakes in key moments.
Despite the loss, Djokovic showed impressive form throughout the tournament, a positive sign as he continues to challenge younger stars like Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.
In a closely contested first set, neither player managed to break serve, forcing a tie-break where Sinner edged Djokovic.
The Italian carried that momentum into the second set, capitalizing on Djokovic’s errors to secure a crucial break and eventually the match.
While Djokovic’s pursuit of the century mark continues, Sinner’s dominance in 2024 remains unquestionable, with the Italian securing 65 wins from 71 matches this season.
