Nwankwo Kanu is one of the most decorated player to ever played for the Nigerian super Eagles, proving himself both home and abroad.

Nigeria has produced many talented and also legendary footballers and many who have achieved in the football world. Kanu Nwankwo a Nigerian player stand out when it comes to this as he has an achieved both home and abroad. made name every where he goes with his brilliant footballing skills. His success and contributions to Nigerian football glued his place as the most successful player in the country’s history.

Early career of Kanu

He was born in August 1, 1976, in Owerri, Nigeria, Kanu began his professional career with Iwuanyanwu Nationale (now Heartland FC) in the Nigerian league. His  talent paved way for him to Europe as scout discovered his potential, creating a path for a move to AFC Ajax in 1993.

Kanu didn’t slack following his move to Ajax annd immediately established himself as a key player, helping the club rise in the Dutch football. He won three Eredivisie titles and played a crucial role in Ajax’s UEFA Champions League victory in 1995. This success opened the stage for his move to Italy’s Inter Milan in 1996.

Career at Inter Milan

Following his move to Italy, Kanu’s faced setback at Inter Milan as he was diagnosed with a serious heart defect that required surgery. The news would have thought it would end the career of Kanu, but he made an incredible comeback, returning to professional football and winning the 1998 UEFA Cup with Inter. This great determination surely would have inspired young players that with hard work you can achieve.

Premier League Glory with Arsenal

In 1999, Kanu moved to premier league has he played in London team Arsenal. Playing under French man Arsène Wenger, he became a fan favorite with his incredible dribbling skills, vision, and knack for scoring crucial goals.

Kanu’s achievements  at Arsenal:
– Two Premier League titles (2001–02, 2003–04)
– Two FA Cups (2002, 2003)
– The FA Community Shield (1999)

He was also part of the famous Invincibles squad that went undefeated in the 2003–04 Premier League season—a feat unmatched in English football history.

International achievement with Nigeria super Eagles

Just like we said earlier, he achieved both home and abroad, Kanu was a key figure for Nigeria, contributing to some of the country’s greatest footballing moments:

– FIFA U-17 World Cup Champion (1993): Kanu played a crucial role in Nigeria’s victory, showcasing his potential at a young age.
– Olympic Gold Medalist (1996): As captain of the U-23 Nigerian team, Kanu led the team to a historic victory at the Atlanta 1996 Olympics, defeating Brazil and Argentina. His performances earned him global recognition.
– AFCON Runner-Up (2000): Kanu played a key role in Nigeria’s journey to the AFCON final, where they finished second.

Kanu’s brilliance earned him numerous individual honors, including:
– African Player of the Year (1996, 1999) – One of only a few Nigerians to win the award twice.
– BBC African Footballer of the Year (1997, 1999).

Later Years
Kanu had a brief spell with West Bromwich Albion before moving to Portsmouth in 2006. Kanu scored the winning goal in the 2008 FA Cup final against Cardiff City. This victory made him the first Nigerian to win the FA Cup three times.

Legacy and Philanthropy
Beyond football, Kanu’s influence extends into humanitarian work. He founded the Kanu Heart Foundation, which provides medical assistance to children with heart conditions. His foundation has saved hundreds of lives, making him a role model beyond the sport.
