Arteta Defends Havertz After Arsenal’s FA Cup Exit to Manchester United
Mikel Arteta backs Arsenal striker Kai Havertz following their FA cup exit to 10 men Manchester United at the Emirate stadium.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has defended his players, including Kai Havertz, after their third-round FA Cup elimination against Manchester United on Sunday. Despite dominating large portions of the game, the Gunners were left to rue missed chances in the 1-1 draw, eventually losing on penalties.
Havertz, who joined Arsenal from Chelsea in 2023 for a fee of up to £67.5 million, endured a difficult evening at the Emirates. The German forward missed a golden opportunity from six yards out during normal time and failed to convert his penalty in the shootout, making him the only player to miss from the spot.
Arteta offered his unwavering support for Havertz and his team following the defeat. “To him and to all of them, I said that I love them. We all love them individually and as a team. What this group produces every three days is incredible,” Arteta said.
The manager further stated that the team’s effort and performance remain a source of pride, regardless of the result. “I’m not going to lose sight of that because of a missed opportunity or two. Confidence and the emotional side of the game are hard to manage, but we will continue to work on it.”
The defeat has mount criticism over Arsenal’s attacking options, especially with Gabriel Jesus sidelined due to what Arteta described as a “big worry” injury. Asked about potential signings in the January transfer window, Arteta remained non-committal.
“I understand the question, but I cannot love our players more. We are very focused on helping the ones we have perform at the highest level,” he said, reiterating that transfer activity depends on circumstances beyond his control.
Sources earlier stated that Arsenal would only consider entering the market if injuries or unforeseen opportunities arose. Arteta reiterated this stance, saying, “The rest is not in my hands.”
Arsenal now shift focus to their next Premier League clash, a high-stakes north London derby against Tottenham Hotspur at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday. The Gunners will aim to rebound quickly as they continue their push for domestic success.
