Southgate to help Rashford with recent struggle
Gareth Southgate plans to speand some time with Marcus Rashford in other to find out about is recent poor form, explains why Jadon Sacho was left out.
England head coach Gareth Southgate has planned to meet with Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford concerning his drop in form.
The 24-year-old star has struggled for form and has not been a regular starter for the club this season.
He was also involved in an altercation with United fans following the 1-0 Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night.
Rashford has been omitted from Southgate’s latest England squad for the upcoming friendlies against Switzerland and Ivory Coast
Southgate has a close relationship with Rashford having also managed him in the Under-21s and will have a heart-to-heart with the player after the international break.
Speaking with the media Southgate said: “We always want to see our players enjoying their football and playing well. You would have to have a bit of a question mark on both of those things at the moment.
“We’ve got to try to help if we can, but that’s a lot more difficult when you’re not working with the players every day.
“I will spend some time with him when we’re finished this camp. I’ve known him a long time. He was in a couple of Under-21s squads with us.
“In the end, you’ve got to find a way as a player. It’s not always about coaches resolving things.
“This is a period where he’s got to show the strength of character to come through.”
He added: “It would be beneficial for me to sit with him. He hasn’t been in many of our squads. We’ve picked him a lot and he hasn’t been able to meet up.
“That would be time well spent.”
Sancho also was not called up in the England squad and the English manager has an explanation for it.
On Sancho, Southgate added: “There are other attacking players in our squad who are ahead of him in our opinion. Jadon in the last few weeks his performances have improved but it is an area of the pitch where we have competition for places.
“With Marcus, he is in the same position as everyone else, whether they are in the squad or not they all have to play well in the next period, it is a difficult time for him, he is clearly not at his best.
“There is plenty of time, we know about Marcus, we know what he can bring to us.”
Southgate, meanwhile, said Marc Guehi’s performances in the big games for Crystal Palace have earned him a maiden call-up.
He added: “With Marc he has had a really consistent season, I have been really impressed on and off the ball.
“In the biggest games he has been really calm, we know a lot about him from the junior teams. There are some centre-halves who are pushing and very close but we have chosen Marc and Ben White.”
