British Star Cameron Norrie Survives Four-Hour Thriller Against Comesaña to Reach Third Round.

Cameron Norrie fought through a gripping four-hour match to defeat Francisco Comesaña 7-6 (5), 6-3, 6-7 (0), 7-6 (4), securing a spot in the US Open third round and a rematch with Novak Djokovic.

The British No. 1 stepped up after Jack Draper’s injury withdrawal dimmed hopes for a deep British run, ensuring at least one man advances to the last 32. Norrie, who has won just two sets in six prior meetings with the 24-time Grand Slam champion, faces a Djokovic who has looked uncharacteristically off-form so far.
Norrie’s journey wasn’t easy, benefiting from Sebastian Korda’s first-round retirement but facing a stern test from Comesaña, ranked a career-high 54 after upsetting 28th seed Alex Michelsen. The Argentine, backed by a passionate South American crowd, pushed Norrie to the limit, saving three set points in the fourth set before losing the tiebreak. Norrie broke serve early in the third game, confirmed after a lengthy video review, and clinched key points in the second set, though Comesaña fought back with a stunning tiebreak run in the third.
The atmosphere turned electric, resembling a football match with vocal support for both players. Norrie, embracing the energy, tossed a towel to one of Comesaña’s loudest fans post-match, saying, “It was a tough match… The atmosphere was unreal from the Argentinians… They made the match very special for everyone.” Despite a double-break lead slipping in the fourth, Norrie sealed victory with an ace, showcasing resilience and high-level play. Fans now eagerly await his clash with Djokovic, hoping for a breakthrough against the Serb at this year’s US Open.
