Bellerín Stunner Dents Real Madrid Title Hopes as Mbappé Limps Off
Former Barça man strikes late to leave Madrid trailing by eight points
Real Madrid’s dreams of a La Liga comeback suffered a massive blow on Friday night as a 94th-minute equaliser from Héctor Bellerín earned Real Betis a hard-fought 1-1 draw. The result means Madrid now sit eight points behind leaders Barcelona, who can stretch that lead to 11 points with a win against Getafe later today.
Madrid took the lead in the 17th minute when Vinícius Júnior reacted quickest to a rebound after Federico Valverde’s powerful long-range strike was parried by Betis keeper Álvaro Valles. It was Vinícius’s 125th goal for the club, and for much of the match, it looked like it would be the winner.
Despite controlling large periods of the game, Madrid failed to find a second goal to kill the match. Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappé both went close, while both teams had strong appeals for handballs turned down by the referee.
The missed chances came back to haunt the visitors deep into stoppage time. Following a scramble in the box, the ball fell to former Arsenal and Barcelona defender Héctor Bellerín, who lashed a low shot into the near post to send the home fans into a frenzy and leave Madrid’s title chase in tatters.
Adding to the frustration for coach Alvaro Arbeloa, star forward Kylian Mbappé had to be substituted in the 81st minute. The Frenchman signaled to the bench after feeling discomfort in his left leg, later confirmed by club sources as a “muscle overload” in his hamstring.
“He had some discomfort and we will see how it develops in the coming days,” Arbeloa said after the match. While the injury does not appear to be serious, it is a major worry for a Madrid side already struggling to keep pace with a dominant Barcelona.
With only a handful of games remaining, the title race is now firmly in Barcelona’s hands. If they beat Getafe today, they will move 11 points clear with just five matches left to play.
